The next township board meeting is October 7 th. We'll find out how the Bisco's court case went. I hope the board doesn't reconsider the consent agreement with the Birkenshaw's. Let's make sure the board knows, we have not changed our minds on the adult bookstore. Like someone said last month, let them open a MacDonalds, at least it would be something the community could use and it's not offensive. Hope to see you all there again.

I'll be there and I'll bring a friend.
We can only hope that the clerk and the treasurer can make the trustees see the light where Bisco's is concerned. Mr. Rushing seems to have binders on where the Birkenshaw's are concerned.
I received a “Vote for Kitty Slamka” poster today in the mail. She brings up the question of the adult book store, but then says nothing about her position regarding it. Do you know her position?
Dear Public,
The township board meeting on Tuesday, February 3rd was a long, but interesting one in regards to the Birkenshaws' consent agreement. The tide is turning with a more balanced level of township residents and nonresidents living nearby the Citgo station that are for and against continuing the battle that has been raging for quite some time - and costing quite a bit of township money.
Firstly, I hope the residents are aware that they have an excellent board. They are extremely knowledgeable not only in procedures, but also in the information that is brought up before the board. Supervisor Rushing always takes the time without even being asked, to explain the procedures, etc. that come up during discussions in a brief and concise way so that the audience is able to follow what is happening. The board comes prepared to each meeting, yet is not afraid to acknowledge when taken by surprise and needs more information and not afraid to give their own honest opinion and back that opinion with what they feel are facts for or against it, whether their peers on the board back them or not. This is a good thing.
Secondly, I understand Supervisor Rushing's stand that he believes he is acting in the township's best interest with his concern over township funds and what will happen when they are possibly depleted by this battle in regards to roads, fire safety, etc. He returned to several words over and over again in his argument for the Birkenshaws, but in my opinion held them over the opposition's head in a chastising manner, while on the other hand, didn't direct them towards the Birkenshaw's direction at all. How convenient, because it is the very words the supervisor kept repeating that have fueled the opposition all along. Those repetitive words were:
· compliance,
· inconsistencies,
· costs,
· disregard and
· principles.
Yes, exactly! Shame on Mr. Rushing to chastise the board in respect that they are suddenly acting inconsistently in the attempt to bind the Birkenshaws into:
· one permanent stance, with no hemming and hawing, no last minute or impromptu changes or demands, no tricks and delay able maneuverings,
· one permanent, complete and proper site plan,
· a permanently respectful regard for - or in regards to - ordinances, blight, rules, regulations, laws, their township's residents, neighboring residents and public safety.
· discontinuing their blatant disregard for: the good of the township by forcing them into this position in the first place, draining their monies, not caring that their properties and buildings are unsafe, rundown and an all-around eyesore to the community.
How can Mr. Rushing chastise us, when the township is sworn to uphold those very principles Birkenshaw is blatantly holding his finger up at, time and time again? Yes, this has dragged on long enough! But, don't forget why.
· Don't forget he does as he pleases, when he pleases and has for as long as he's pleased.
· Don't forget he has ghetto-fied a portion of Riley and Emmett Townships and a major portion of Main Street in the Village of Emmett and he doesn't care.
· Don't forget he continuously breaks the rules and he doesn't care.
· Please...don't forget that this is just the current battle with them - and there's always another one around the corner. That is not our fault, that is theirs.
Mr. Rushing did make a good point, although I can tell you that a good number of people already are boycotting their businesses. We do need to make a more visible and vocal protest. Public picketing is a good idea and I'm sure we can come up with more ideas, too. Yes, we don't have the money to fight them the way you have - but fight them we have. Don't discount that and don't discount us because we can't afford it anymore. Believe me, they are discounting us ALL enough as it is.
